When you rent a property through an agent you are always paying more than a private letting - but you expect in return that repairs will be done, that you'll have a point of contact, that things will be done above board and professionally.

How naive.

Alex Clark letting agency are shameless. They take advantage of their tenants, never do repairs, don't respond to calls, if they do get around to fixing anything it is badly done and no attempt is made to bring the property up to a reasonable standard... in fact the only time you will hear from them is when they want to take money from you at the end of the tenancy. Looking at the reviews of their previous tenants a pattern emerges of tenants' deposits being withheld for "cleaning" ... literally hundreds of pounds each time.

Bearing in mind that most cleaners charge £8 or £10 an hour it is staggering that these people can charge almost £400 for cleaning a house ... yes that's just under 50 man hours of cleaning.

If you decide to rent from these people be prepared: take photographs of everything when you move in and when you leave, write on the inventory, do not assume that anything is done in good faith. Make sure that you are present for the final inspection. Most people don't do these things, which gives the agents the chance to rip you off, and that is exactly what they do.
